Usually in a support ticket. Usually about ten minutes after they’ve already ordered the wrong one. So here’s the honest version, written by people who sell both and have to help you fix it when the choice goes sideways.

The short answer is that a Linux KVM VPS Server is the right buy for most people, most of the time. It’s cheaper to run, it runs more of the software people actually host, and it doesn’t come with a licence clock ticking in the corner of the screen. But “most people” isn’t “you”. There’s a real group who need Windows, and for them a Linux box is a dead end dressed up as a saving.

Same box. Different operating system.

Here’s the bit that surprises people. On our platform, a Windows VPS and a Linux VPS are the same product. Same host node, same KVM hypervisor, same SSD storage, same 10 Gbps port. You pick the operating system in the VirtFusion control panel and the machine reinstalls itself. That’s it.

How KVM Virtualisation Works

KVM is the reason this works. It’s full hardware virtualisation, part of the Linux kernel since version 2.6.20 in February 2007 (LWN, November 2016), and it doesn’t care what runs inside the guest. Windows Server 2025 boots on it as happily as Debian 13. We’ve had customers flip between the two more than once in a single billing cycle. Annoying to watch. Perfectly allowed.

So the question isn’t really “Windows VPS or Linux VPS”. It’s “which OS do I load onto this kvm ssd vps, and what does that decision cost me over the next year?”

What Windows actually costs on a KVM VPS Server

The RAM. Start there.

Microsoft’s own minimum for Windows Server with Desktop Experience is 2 GB, and its hardware requirements page warns that an install on a VM at the bare minimum fails (Microsoft Learn, Windows Server hardware requirements). In practice 2 GB is miserable. Windows Update alone will eat it. That’s why our Windows images need the 4 GB plan or larger, which is $8.99 a month at the time of writing. A 1 GB Linux plan on the same hardware is $2.25. Same customer. Four times the bill before you’ve installed anything.

Then the licence. And this is where we need to be very specific, because what follows applies to our product and to nothing else.

Ethernet Servers supplies Windows Server 2019, 2022 and 2025 as Microsoft’s 180-day evaluation edition. Microsoft’s Evaluation Center says the evaluation expires after 180 days, must be activated over the internet within the first 10 days to avoid automatic shutdown, and can be converted to a retail edition once you’ve finished evaluating (Microsoft Evaluation Center, Windows Server 2025 page). We don’t sell Windows licences and we don’t audit what you run. But if you’re putting a client’s ERP on it, buying a proper licence is on you.

Now compare that to the Linux side. AlmaLinux, Rocky, Debian, Ubuntu, Alpine, FreeBSD. All free. All supported for years. No timer.

Where Linux wins (and where it doesn’t)

Linux runs the web. W3Techs puts Linux on 62.6% of websites where the operating system can be identified, against 8.1% for Windows, as of 28 September 2026 (W3Techs). If you’re hosting a WordPress site, a Node app, a Minecraft server, a Docker stack or a VPN, the tutorials, the packages and the people who can help you at 2am are all on Linux.

But look at the other end of that same survey. Among the top 100,000 sites, Windows climbs to 22.7% and Linux drops to 53.3% (W3Techs, 28 September 2026). Big companies with .NET codebases and Active Directory don’t move to Linux because a blog told them to. They have a decade of internal software that expects IIS and SQL Server, and rewriting it costs more than the licences ever will.

That’s the honest split. Linux for the open web. Windows for the corporate stack. Neither is “better”. One of them is much cheaper for what you probably want to do.

Quick aside. We also see a steady trickle of people who order Windows because they’ve never used a terminal and the idea of one scares them. Fair enough. But a Linux desktop image (we offer Debian 13 with GNOME or XFCE, and AlmaLinux 9 or Rocky 9 with GNOME, all on 4 GB plans and up) gets you a point-and-click desktop without the licence headache. Try that first.

The comparison, feature by feature

Licensing and lifecycle

Linux distributions publish support windows and then keep to them. Windows does too, and the dates matter right now. Windows Server 2022 leaves mainstream support on 13 October 2026, two weeks from when this was written, and moves to security-only extended support until 14 October 2031 (Microsoft message center notice MC1470756, 11 September 2026). Windows Server 2025 runs mainstream until November 2029 and extended until November 2034 (Microsoft Lifecycle, dates shown in Pacific Time). So if you’re deploying Windows today, pick 2025. Don’t let an old tutorial talk you into 2019.

One bit of good news for Windows buyers. Microsoft’s January 2026 SPLA price rise of roughly 10% hit Exchange Server, SharePoint Server and Skype for Business Server, and left Windows Server and SQL Server pricing unchanged (TD Synnex, October 2025; Microsoft Community Hub, June 2025). That matters if you buy a licensed Windows VPS from a host that resells through SPLA. It doesn’t touch our evaluation images either way.

RAM and disk

Covered above, but the disk half deserves a line. A Server with Desktop Experience install is roughly 4 GB heavier than Server Core, per Microsoft’s requirements page, and that’s before months of updates pile up. On our 4 GB plan you get 160 GB of SSD, so it fits. It just leaves less room than a Linux install would. Debian 13 minimal uses a fraction of that.

Remote access

Windows gives you RDP. It’s excellent. A full desktop, drag and drop, clipboard, and it copes with a bad hotel connection better than VNC ever has. Linux gives you SSH, which is faster, scriptable and far less of a target once you’ve moved it off port 22 and locked it to your own IP. Both are fine. RDP left open to the whole internet is a different story, and it’s a story we read in abuse reports.

Control panels and software

cPanel, DirectAdmin and Webuzo are Linux products. We install them free if you bring a valid licence. IIS, SQL Server and most .NET Framework apps are Windows only. MetaTrader’s MT4 and MT5 terminals are built for Windows, which is why forex traders keep ordering Windows boxes from us. Docker runs natively on Linux. It can be made to run on Windows Server. Nobody who’s done that recommends it.

Backups, ISOs and recovery

Identical. Daily off-site backups with up to 7 days of restore points, custom ISO mounting, and recovery from inside VirtFusion. The KVM layer doesn’t know or care which OS you’re saving. One practical difference. A Windows guest that’s been hard-rebooted mid-update can take a very long time to come back, and our staff can’t see inside it to tell you why. Linux tends to just come back.

Who should buy a Windows VPS

You’ve got a .NET application that isn’t moving to modern .NET any time soon. You need SQL Server and only SQL Server. You run trading bots on MT4 or MT5. You need a machine that joins an Active Directory domain. Or you’ve got a piece of niche accounting or CAD software that’s been Windows-only since 2009 and its vendor stopped answering emails.

Any of those, buy Windows. Get the 4 GB plan at minimum, 8 GB if SQL Server is involved, and budget for a real licence from day one. The 180-day evaluation is for finding out whether the thing works. And it does work well. KVM gives Windows proper virtual CPUs and its own kernel, so you won’t get the “it’s slow because a neighbour is compiling” problem that container-based hosting has.

Who should buy a Linux KVM VPS Server

Everyone else. Web hosting. Mail (ask us to open port 25, it’s blocked by default and we approve requests case by case). Game servers. VPNs. Docker. Databases. Learning. A cheap box to run a Telegram bot. If you’re not sure, this is you, and the affordable vps route at $2.25 a month for 1 GB is a low-risk way to find out. There’s a 60-day money-back guarantee on it anyway.

Pick a distribution with a long support window. Debian 12 or 13, Ubuntu 24.04, AlmaLinux 9 or Rocky 9. Skip Arch and Fedora on a production server unless you enjoy surprises. Both are on our list because people ask for them, and both will happily ruin a Tuesday.

What we’d pick

Linux. Nearly every time. It’s the cheaper KVM VPS Server, it has a far larger pool of free software and free help, and it never asks you to reinstall because a counter hit zero.

But we’d pick it knowing exactly when we wouldn’t. If a client says “SQL Server” or “Active Directory” or “MT5”, the argument’s over and Windows wins. Spending a week wrestling .NET Framework 4.8 under Wine to save $6.74 a month is a false economy, and people try it. In January. Again.

One last thing. Because both run on the same KVM hosts, the wrong choice isn’t permanent. Reinstall from the panel, restore your data, carry on. Upgrades between plans are supported. Downgrades aren’t, because VirtFusion blocks them to prevent data loss, so start small and grow.

Every week someone asks us this.
