New OS images available: Alpine Linux 3.23 + FreeBSD 15.0

Alpine Linux 3.23 and FreeBSD are now available to deploy on our KVM VPS lineup across Frankfurt in Germany, as well as New Jersey, Los Angeles, and Miami in the United States.

These new OS images give customers more choice when deploying a fresh VPS or reinstalling an existing one. With Alpine Linux 3.23 and FreeBSD now available across our main locations, customers can quickly provision a VPS with the latest stable releases.

Alpine Linux 3.23 highlights

Alpine Linux 3.23 includes several useful improvements for customers who want a lightweight and security-focused Linux environment.

  • apk-tools v3 (package manager updates)
  • linux-stable replaces linux-edge (tracks stable kernel releases)
  • Optional /usr merge support for new installs (opt-in)

For customers considering Alpine Linux 3.23 and FreeBSD, Alpine remains a strong option for minimal, efficient VPS deployments.

FreeBSD 15.0-RELEASE highlights

FreeBSD 15.0-RELEASE also brings important updates for VPS users, especially those who want newer storage, packaging, and compatibility features.

  • pkgbase technology preview (managing the base system via pkg(8))
  • Native inotify support for improved Linux app compatibility
  • OpenZFS updated
  • Official release artifacts include OCI container images

As part of our latest new OS images, FreeBSD 15.0-RELEASE gives BSD users access to major platform improvements on our KVM VPS lineup.

Deploying the new VPS images

You can select Alpine Linux 3.23 or FreeBSD 15.0-RELEASE during provisioning, or via reinstall for an existing VPS.

Please note that reinstalling a VPS wipes the VM disk. If you are an existing customer planning to switch to Alpine Linux 3.23 and FreeBSD, make sure you create a full off-site backup of anything important first.

Why we recommend the latest stable releases

To make the most of the latest features, security updates, and stability fixes, we always recommend running the latest stable version of your chosen operating system. Whether you choose Alpine Linux 3.23 or FreeBSD 15.0-RELEASE, keeping your VPS up to date helps you get the best value from your service.
